Is it possible to increase the length of a Digital Freeview Harddrive? The one I have has a capacity of 40 hours and, even though I can transfer recordings to video, I would like to increase its capacity if possible.

Yes. But it most likely invalidates your hardware.

Take the device apart, and see what type of hard drive it's using. Go to a computer shop and get an equivalent type of drive, but with a higher capacity.

Now, connect the original drive to your computer and use a disk imaging program to make a perfect disk image of it. Then connect your new drive, and put this image on that drive, so it's a perfect match, but with more capacity.

Then, connect the new drive to the device, and put it all back together.

(This all assumes that the chipset the device uses will support the additional capacity.)
Yes ..... and no ....
Most things can be hacked .....
it depends on which machine you have and how popular it is

I have a gizmo called a Thompson Tivo .... and there is plenty of support for this type of machine
(I now have 2x 200Gb drive giving 360 hours of recording time (at low quality) in mine ... i wouldn't be without it

Sky+ also gets lots of attention

(I know this isn't your model ... but look at the instructions - they are typical of what's involved)

You also need to understand that doing so will void any warranty.

any Upgrade depend on being able to port the operating system to the new disc - in my case this was done using an old pc and a downloaded utility ....
it was fiddly - but not difficult ... and took about 5 hours in total
