Hi,

My parents are going to be me a HD tv for my new house.... The 1 i want has have very good reviews on the picture quality but poor reviews on sound.

----It has an optical audio out.

The current dvd player I have has 5.1 surround sound and has an optical audio port but does not say if it is input or output.

If i connected the TV to it (though the optical audio) would it play the audio through the surround system (there is no AUX function, only DVD).

Maybe.

You really should post the make and model of your DVD player so that you will get the correct answer.
the dvd will be output only to an amp with optical input
you cant really tell much difference between optical or coaxial digital ,most home cinema buffs prefer that coaxial though
