When the little yellow badge appears in the toolbar at the bottom of the computer, showing that automatic updates are being downloaded from Windows, it slows my computer right down and sometimes freezes it. Then I cannot stop the downloads once started. Can I adjust the settings for this or even choose what downloads I want. If so, how do I do this please. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition. Many thanks!!

Sure. Go into control panel and double click "automatic updates". You can set the schedule in there or even stop it altogether.
It's a pain .... but some of the updated can be quite important (depending on your surfing habits)

Best don't disable it altogether (unless you use a dialup 56k modem)
.... go for the just notify me option or schedule for when you eat.

then you stay in control
