Soundforge or Goldwave should be able to do that for free. Adobe Audition can do it too but you may have to pay for that. Search google for links to download these programs.

have tried these two but not free, only a free trial, any suggestions, thanks.
Did you try adobe audition?

I make dance music and use this. It will do exactly what you are after. You can reverse, speed up and slow down, add effects like echoes and things.
The best totally free music editing software on the internet

Don't judge it on this web page cos it's really high quality and very versatile. Plus a lot of folk use it so you can always find great hints and tips online.

Oh and you can do everything you mentioned in your question with it btw!
I suggested soundforge and he didn't seem impressed.
Audacity isn't soundforge and audacity is totally free

ive downloaded audacity but dont know how to use it, anyone got any advice for a 60 year old complete novice, a real idiots guide to make a bits and pieces music quiz etc, thanks.
If your doing bits and pieces just play roughly ten seconds or however long of a track pause and then skip to the next one. I used to do that with a tv/movie/adverts quiz and never had a problem.

Dont overcomplicate lol
There are some tutorials here. You need to record the bit of the song you want onto Audacity before you can edit it. I'd be inclined to agree with the Rev though...

Vinyl?

nah just use media player lol
This is surely the easiest way to download music/movies that I've ever seen .
