Does anyone know anything about diamonds?

Basically I have a braclet with 9 diamond equating to 1/4 crt it used to belong to my aunt and she is now insisting that I have the diamonds replaced for better quality stones.

I have taken it to a jewlers that I know and he has quoted me �400 to get them replaced with 9 stones that make 1/3 crt. Does that sound too cheap?

The bracelet is 18crt white gold and apparently the new diamonds are 36 point and 100 points = 1 crt

what do you think people?

Personally I wouldn't know a real diamond if it jumped out and bit me. Why would you want the stones replaced?

I don't see what difference it would make unless the stones are looking shabby or falling out.

I have bought a one carat bracelet for �200.00 very recently but from the high street I would have paid a lot more.

The normal person in the street could tell the difference between diamonds and cubic zirconias so i wouldnt bother.

I wouldn't spoil the bracelet by replacing the diamonds. Leave it as it is. If the 9 diamonds equate 1/4 carat, then they're really just small chippings. The same'd go for 9 diamonds making up a 1/3 carat. I think the price is very cheap as well - but maybe because of the size of the stones. I have a 1/2 carat diamond ring (18 ct. yellow gold) that cost over �2000, and that was given to me a few years ago, but it has only one flaw and is a beautiful stone. I think it'd just be nice to keep your bracelet as a sweet pressie from your auntie.

If that sounds like you're saying the stones are 4 points each?

That's very small about 2.2mm

I know it's of sentimental value but I really don't think you'll be adding much to the value by having it done

Just a thought you might be better having the jewler just remove the stones and clean and reassemble the whole thing.

Especially If it's an old piece - I think you'll probably see a much more noticable improvement

The price of a diamond is determined on the Four C's: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. The more yellow a diamond is, the lower it's value and the same with it's clarity (whether there are any imperfections within the stone, although they're rarely visible to the naked eye).

With this in mind, I can't see that the stones that are already set in the bracelet can be of a worse quality than the ones you have been quoted as you're being offered more in the way of points (carat). For them to be of the same worth, this would make sense. (For the same value, one of the "C's" has to be compromised.)

If I were you I would take the bracelet to be valued with it's own stones. Try Ernest Jones. They have an independent valuation team that come in on set days of the week. They can also help you out if you do decide to alter the bracelet, with their 'Design Days'. I hope this helps.
