Pardon my ignorance but is it possible to copy video games onto blank DVDs? Say I want to copy a game for the playstation 2, can it be done succesfully onto a dvd and then played on the playstation 2? What platform is necessary to copy a game?

Yep, it possible to copy Playstation 2 video quite easily. A program called Alcohol 120% even has a specific mode to do so.

Then you have to do some trickery with the Playstation 2 console itself, as it contains firmware that detects the presence of non-original discs. This is overcome with the installation of a 'modchip', but it can be a pain in the ar5e and of course invalidates your warranty. A second method is to use a special boot disk, which is simply inserted before you put your copied game in, and is much more preferable if you don't fancy getting the soldering iron out!
Just google it, there are thousands of guides on t'internet :-)
heres a link to a blog about a program that can do it without buying any expensive hardware.
