It stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and allows you to connect HD equipment toghether for the best possible picture. Lots of info here.

In reality it's an awful connection that isn't actually that good, but all the HD equipment manufacturers are using it, so it'll become the standard, like SCART is now.
