Sim card fault on a Nokia mobile

Is it possable for a sim card to fail?...My Nokia keeps flashing the the G symbol and then powering off all the time but if i remove the card the phone works ok but just without the service...

have you tried cleaning the contacts? rub them with a piece of kitchen towel , also the contacts in the phone where the sim card locates to. they are very low voltage and a small amount of grease will cause a poor contact.
you can get a new sim card for about �2.50 if that fails, but migt be better to borrow one from a friend on the same network and see if the fault is still there.
