We have a new digital tv and the dvd player and video recorder aren't compatible with it. How will I know if what we buy as a replacement will be compatible - which acronyms are important?!

if you want to record on the vcr (from standard tv broadcasts) you need to plug the aerial into the vcr then, using another coax cable, the vcr's rf out to the tv aerial input.
post back if none of that makes sense and i will explain more!

I have to agree with romko, I see no reason why these devices should not be compatible.
Who told you there were not compatible ?
You should be able to connect up a DVD player and a video recorder to a digital TV.
The only thing that may NOT be compatible is that your Video recorder may have an ANALOGUE TV tuner in it rather than a DIGITAL tuner.
When you record one video channel while watching another you are actually recording via the TV tuner INSIDE the Video recorder.
If the TV tuner inside your video recorder is analougue it can only record the 5 main channels and not any others.
