The simple answer is that your dvd-r would only work on your computer because a cd player's laser works with a different wavelength of light 780nm. DVDs work at the higher end of the laser spectrum 640nm, a cd player would simply not recognise the tracks on a dvd disc. You can by all means put cda or mp3 files onto a dvd, but only a computer (or some of the latest dvd recorders) would be able to recognise the data and be able to play it back.
