Music to DVD

If I burn music files to a DVD-R instead of a CD-R, what will the disc play on?

Would it work in the CD player of my hi-fi or the CD player in the car? Would the file format extension make any difference to what it would play on?

I ask because right now I've got more blank DVD-R's than CD-R's.

The simple answer is that your dvd-r would only work on your computer because a cd player's laser works with a different wavelength of light 780nm. DVDs work at the higher end of the laser spectrum 640nm, a cd player would simply not recognise the tracks on a dvd disc. You can by all means put cda or mp3 files onto a dvd, but only a computer (or some of the latest dvd recorders) would be able to recognise the data and be able to play it back.
