router wep-thingy ...i dont have a clue!!!
4 Answers
ok so this is a tricky one... (well it is for me, but someone out there will probably be laughing their technological head off at me) right so i have a netgear router: SSID tw34715768 (i dont know what this is, just thought it would be helpful!) and i need to connect it to my laptop. ive been told that i need to find my netgear manual online, type in some ip address (?!) and find a wep(?!) and put that number in when i try to connect to my seurity enabled network (you see my laptop can recognise the router but wont connect becuase it is security enabled).
If any one has any idea, or can point me in the right direction i will be extremely grateful.
thanks a million :D

The SSID is the name of the network that your router is using to broadcast on (this can be easily changed and also hidden so that you would need to know the SSID to access the network).
You may also have MAC filtering in place , so you would need to know the MAC address of your laptop so that it can be added to the routers setting
WEP settings ensure that your network is encypted, so that it is a lot harder for someone to access your broadband connection (it's basically a case of entering the same password on both the laptop and the router, once you access the settings it will become a lot clearer).

Assuming you know nothing about the configuration history of this router it might be best to set it back to it's factory default settings.
Not sure how to achieve this on your router but some have a button on the back.
The normal admin IP address for Netgear routers is 192.168.0.1 as previously posted. Once you get the admin pages up the default username=admin and the password= password.
