Best Broadband Connection

Hi,

I need to get broadband for the house I live in but I really have no idea how to even begin to go about it. I'm aware of the names of some big companies but they all seem to want you to buy media packages and it gets me really confused.

The other problem is it's for a shared house so I'd really life if possible for it to belong to the house rather than any individual member. Can that be done?

I'm in the Surrey area if that makes any differences to the types of broadband avaialble?

Hi China Doll,

There are packages out there to suit pretty much everyones needs, and also their pocket, so choosing what is best for you can be difficult.

First off you should decide what you want to use the BB for, for example, if you just want oy for general internet browsing, then a lesser BB would be fine, but if like me you ant to download lots of music or movies, then a higher speed uncapped BB might suit you best.

I have had cable broadband (NTL/Virgin) for several years now, and I would highly recommend it. It can be a litle more expensive compared to ADSL Broadband, but I think it is worth it. and I have only ever had 1 problem in the 6 years I have used it.

bear in mind that the speed figures they quote are maximums, nobody but Usain Bolt ever actually gets them. I've got 20mb from Virgin, but I just checked it here

and I'm getting less than 12... which is actually okay for iPlayer and most applications.

On the other hand it can slow to a crawl in the evenings sometimes and I have to unplug the router and plug it back in again.

It's also worth googling around to see how well their helpdesks do - fast speeds are no good if your service breaks down and there's nobody answering the phone.

Anyway, Which? just did a report and they give Zen as their Best Buy with 87% satisfaction rates - top marks for ease of set-up and customer help, three out of five for value for money. Various packages available offering different speeds. I've never even heard of them, probably a small company with few but happy users, but here they are:
