But if you have an interest in computing without being too technical the fortnightly magazine Computer Active is excellent - it uses plain language and explains things very clearly.
But learning to use Google properly is a big help.

Also there are some very good books - have a look in your library. The 'dummies' books are good for getting a grip of the basics but you may find other formats suit you better.
I am convinced that children learn computing so quickly because the are not frightened of breaking anything, whereas we grown ups see a huge bill on the horizon if we press the wrong key. In fact it is very difficult to seriously harm your pc.

...also, yes, some of us have studied IT and can direct you to sites, but squarebear is right, Google's invaluable.
If you want to genuinely start on the road to being more adept at pc skills, start with the ECDL course and see where that brings you. There'll be a course run near you - you have achoice of classes or study in your own time.

My company in the UK was primarily b2b but we did a little retail stuff as well. When someone walked in and prefaced the conversation with "My son/daughter/neighbour's kid is a whizz with computers", we knew we had at least a day's work fixing their machine :-)
