"Disk cleanup " XP failure
8 Answers
How do you repair "disk cleanup" on Windows XP? I start it going, it gets to about 3 green bars and then just stops. I've tried clearing files on the internet options menu. Can I do anything else?

Hope that helps.
Have you ever let it just carry on doing its thing, or do you cancel the operation? The reason I ask is that when I do a disk clean-up, I only get about 3 green bars as well, but if I just leave it to its own devices it will do what it's meant to be doing. I think it just takes a few minutes to do it! Not a very technical answer, I know. Sorry!
If you use an NTFS filesystem (WindowsXP's default, and the one most commonly used on systems with XP pre-installed) then Disk Cleanup uses the 'compression' facility of the NTFS system to compress the least used files to save disk space. Unfortunately, this takes a while - and it seems as though the program's crashed while it's sorting itself out, when it's in fact hard at work adding compression to these files.
If you tick all but the 'Compress Old Files' option, the whole thing should complete more quickly.
Not that this really matters now, as you've found an alternate solution...
