Calling All Computer Boffins!!! I Need Help PLEASE

I have tried all weekend to do this still no joy, I brought a lap top the weekend, The man at pc world said it was easy to get a wireless connection by plugging the lap top on and look at the bottom of my dsl internet box and tap in the wep key in to the new laptop and i would be connected. Well that was a load of cobblers there is no wep key on the bottom of the box and i still am unable to get a wireless connection from my pc upstairs, can any one please give me step by step instructions, the pc with the internet on is xp( Emachine) and the lap top is vista (acer). its doing my nut in now!!!! 2 days at it

I assume that you have a wireless router? What make is it?

I is a netgear dg834g ( AOL)

Have you activated the wireless function on the laptop?

On my FujiSiemens I have to press Fn and F2 at the same time.

A little internet icon then appears on the toolbar. If it doesn't connect I right click on the icon and select search for wireless networks.

The thing is that i get connected but not to my pc, i somehow have logged onto someone down the roads, and get booted off by his pc,

I'm at work at the moment and can't remember how but on my laptop, I can get a list of all available wireless networks up. I then choose mine rather than my next door neighbours!

Right click on internet icon.

Select - view available wireless networks.

If it connects to a neighbours then click on disconnect.

Find yours on the list and click on connect.

Thanks to all of those who tried to help me, i got on to my service provider today and it was my netgear that was the problem, i had to change the channels.
