PC Memory Problem. CMOS?

Ive just got a 1gb memory for my PC Ive put it in and windows will not boot Ive gone into the BIOS event log and it says CMOS Memory Size Different. Ive put me old memory back in and the PC is perfect as before. What does the CMOS message mean can I get around it and use my new memory?

did you use antic-static precautions before you handled memory?because apart from incompatibility (as ac has already mentioned ) I can see no other real solution for your prob.
Some older PCs store the total amount of memory as a BIOS setting and then compare the value against what they detect in hardware when the PC is booted. . Most newer PCs (as I think will be in the case for you) just use what they detect when the machine is powered up
if (unlikely) your comp is as in the former case (mostly older pcs) Check ur memory settings in the bios or it could be a corrupt cmos (most likey the battery) but again you would expect to see a check sum error displayed so I would go with AC or damaged memory on this one

the processor isn't the fastest in the world .... but it's lga775 so I'd expect it to cope .... your present memory at 268 is quite respectable ... I honestly doubt that 1Gb will make that much difference

basically this is a bog standard dimm

matt1e could well be right ... the error message sounds like the bios isn't happy.

some older boards have a re-detect option .... some you enter the numbers manually.
(don't forget to use the biggest dimm (512?0 of your old stuff as well to give 1.5Gb)

as long as you haven't got ecc it should fit
where / what exactly did you buy? - if no joy - my guess is it's faulty - will it go back?

i dont have the option to enter manuel in the bios. Ive heard reseting the bios re removing the battery and retrying could solve but is this a good idea as sounds risky?!? And sorry whats ecc?

ecc is a type of memory ...... that won't work on your machine.

768Mb (I assume this is 1x256 and 1x512?)

what happens if you take away either one of the sticks?
does the bios detect the change?

Yes the original memory works fine and yes the bios updates if i remove one

dont knoe if it makes a difference but just put it in again and in the bios its reconsing it at 32MB?!?

makes a big difference .... the whole stick is made up of individual chips connected together....
sounds like the link is broken .... back to the shop!!!!!!
