Looking for Andrew Malcolm
6 Answers
I have drawn a complete blank with one of my ancestors. His name is Andrew Malcolm and he was probably born about 1805 in Methven, near Perth, Scotland. He married a Margaret Hutchison in 1835 and they settled eventually in Abernethy. Andrew died in an accident in 1849; I got the funeral record from Perth Library which gave his age and place of birth. I can't find any Andrew Malcolm born anywhere near Methven around1805. I have searched Scotland People extensively. Has anyone come upon this elusive individual in their searching.

There is a part census for Perth done in 1766 whichg is in Perth district archives, it is abit early but you may pick up some earlier generation if they are included.
Have you looked at the 1841 census for perthshire? On sites like ancestry.co.uk you can do blanket searches of the census for any surname and this may turn up the previous generation stil alive in 1841.
Until you have established a family group to search for around 1800 it is going to be frustration just keeping looking for the one person, his name may have been misspelt or omitted from the modertn transcriptions

I looked on Scotlands People, went to the census for 1941, put in both Andrew and Margarets name, and put in soundex under the surname, it has brought up a listing for a 35 year old Andrew Malcom in Perth - the GROS Data number for this was 387/00 034/00 019 - I hope this is your fellow! I didn't have any more credits to look further.
That really sounds like fun - maybe when you come to visit.
Some of the little parishes and villages have somebody who has written a book about the history of the place. Not sure about Methven, will have a look in the fantastic Oxfam book and Music shop in Perth. Failing that the AK Bell Library.
I think that I will go and Google myself and go to bed.
