If there is a fault is there a foolproof method of knowing whether it is hardware or software related?

Like AC said, there is no way to do it.

Software related problems can be checked by removing the software you think is a problem and see if it still works. If you don't know which bit of software is causing the problem, then a re-install will tell you.

Hardware can be a bit more obvious sometimes,especially if one component is smoking inside your case.

For the record, nothing is foolproof to the truly talented fool.
