Win 98(SE) Driver download for USB Pen Drive

I have recently acquired a Dane-Elec 2GB USB Pen. This is plug & Play compatible with Win 2000 and above. As I am using Win98(SE) I set about downloading the appropriate driver from the Dane-Elec website. I was given the choice of four downloads and the website suggested that the correct driver depended on the exact vintage of the Pen Drive. I ended up downloading all the drivers in turn. None of them seem to work despite the fact that I believe I have followed the download instructions to the letter. I have tried Uninstalling and redownloading but this doesn't seem to work either. (I now get the Download Complete message after about 2 seconds whereas I would normally expect a 2 or 3 MB download to take 10 15 minutes on my ancient dial up set up. Does anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong and what I should really be doing in order to get my computer to communicate with my new pen drive? Incidentally, I have downloded other USB device drivers without any problems.

I'm surprised you need more drivers ... often it's the same generic driver re-packaged.

I lso take it you have other USB devices working?
(usb is only integrated in 98se and ME)

there are actually only 2 driver options ... the v261 and 272
but each device has a picture ... and you don't say which is yours ...so over to you

My pen drive is the NACRE - the torpedo shaped one.
The link which you kindly provided takes me to the French version of the website which I have been using for the driver downloads. I am a bit puzzled when you say that there are only two drivers, the v261 and 272. Both these appear to be password utilities rather than drivers. The drivers that I have located - and downloaded - are v2.36r011 and v2.34r003.
I would welcome any further comments you may have.

yes you are right ....
altavista and google translators don't exactly impress ... but it looks as you say as if all the "lusters" are included

the last version being 2.36.011 - dated Dec 2006
so unless you can find info to the contrary ... this is the one I'd use

first remove the aborted attempt
Follow the stages below:
- connected reader
- d�sinstallez the driver (finely to start...)
- click right on the working station, "property" then administrative mitre "of peripheral"
- To remove all that relates to the zmate or if you have an unknown peripheral, with in more one point of exclamation, which relates to the usb remove it.
- Disconnect ALL your ports USB (scanner, modem, printer, 9in4, zmate...)
- Start again
- install the driver downloaded on the site (you help photographs)
- start again
- connect the reader
- the reader is ready to be used (removable disk present in the working station)

Once again, ACtheTROLL, mercy bowcoo for your comments. Incidentally, the translated instructions that you kindly posted are available in marginally better English on the Dane-Elec UK website.
I have done all that you suggest, uninstalled other USB items and removed the existing USB driver programs. I have then tried to redownload the latest driver from the website but I still get the DownloadComplete message after only 2 seconds. As I said originally, I would expect a 2 or 3 MB download to take 10 to 15 minutes on my steam driven system. It therefore seems to me that I have not completely removed the original driver before I try to re-download it.
Any other ideas?

Unless you can come up with anything - and already you've been more helpful than the Dane-Elec Technical Support people, who have not even replied to my emails - I think that my solution is going to be to donate the pen drive to my daughter, who will be able to use it on her WinXP set up. I will then claim it back when / if I ever invest in an up to date computer!

only thing I can think of is get your daughter to download the driver for you ...... and try with that

Let's fix your problem...

Save this file to your desktop:

Extract it
Plug in your USB Drive
Found New Device Wizard will open
Select the option where you tell it where to look
(no auto search)
Select the check box for a directory and browse to the extracted folder
Click next
A window will pop up listing drivers (mine had three)
Don't freak out - they are listed as Toshiba drivers
This works - I promise - I did it...
(Mine had a funky one listed first, then a controller and then one listed as driver)
Select the one that says something like Toshiba USB Driver
Click next and so on, until the install is done
Now you should be able to use your usb drive on your Win98 system.
