Hi Bronners
I'm using a cable router, Netgear WGR614v7. I use XP on my desktop and Vista on my wife's laptop. I've tried "sharing" the printer (Canon Pixma MP160) via the desktop "Printers and Faxes" and then allowing the lappy to search for the printer, but it says it cannot find it !!
Thanks for your reply

sharing any device on a network requires that both devices are password protected .... and of course vista needs extra ticks in boxes

rather than re-inventing the wheel

Success !! After some huffing and puffing and taking my time, I have managed to get the printer accessible from the laptop. Many thanks for all your help.
