dvd/cd/software cds

Can someone throw a light on this problem,
all of a sudden when i put cds ect into modem i get no response at all ,i can say tho the kids have been messing about on pc ,but there is nothing amiss regarding the draw of the moden working properly.it takes the cds but thats all,
please any help,apart from banning the kids,it is a locked computor so they can come to no harm.

What you need to do here is a 'System Restore', here's how it's done.
Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
When you get there, select 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' and click 'Next'.
On the next page you'll see a calendar with some of the dates in bold. Click on one before your problems started and then 'Next'.
Follow the next page and the computer will reboot with any changes since the selected date undone.
You will not lose any saved documents.

Thanks for the reply,
i have done restore as far back as 24 march,with no luck,
when i go into devices the soch.(folllows with numbers)just under the dvd/cd devices has got a yellow exlamation mark,ive checked this out and supponsingly highlight it, delete it ,and restart ,this should correct the problem,it doesnt because the yellow exclamation on yellow background is still there,i try update it tells me cannot find better,im wondering if its the cd rom
thats the trouble now ,can these be repaired reasonably do you no? or have u any suggestions
