Simple question, simple answers please! Should I allow my PC to download Vista SP1?

I installed it and did not have a problem.

BUT there have been reports of people having problems after installing SP1.

If you have a "basic" computer (no complex hardware or other complex setup) then I would say go for it.

Make sure you save any important data before downloading it.

as vhg says ... probably

if you have a new machine ... probably ok
if it was upgraded ... possibly ok (probably)
the update centre is supposed to check your machine and will make a best guess as to whether it will ... and what needs doing.

I hear that the majority of problems are with people who didn't check compatibility of hardware and software before upgrading to vista ... or have ignored warnings and installed favourite software from 98 or xp.

having said that ... with ms there are no guarantees ...
even if the rest of the world is OK ... yours could be the one that fails .... that's life

Make sure you go to each manufacturer site to download the latest VISTA drivers for all of your hardware.

Then go for it.

If you have problems the fallback process is very straight forward.
