is there any way that i would be able to reduce the bit rate of some of my music files. some music which i hae downloaded is 320kb/s, which makes every song take up lots of disk space.

I use a media player called Musicmatch, sadly now taken over by Yahoo so technically not in existence anymore though you can still get older versions http://www.oldapps.com/MusicMatch_Jukebox.htm

Anyway, on later versions they had were were called MP3pro which kept the same quality but had files half the size. They also had a conversion programme to reduce existing tracks you had. Having said all that, it may be that this was only available on the paid for version, and of course, if they don't exist any more, then you can't really pay them.
I used to use a media called DBpoweramp

Very easy to use.
I use Easy Cd-Extractor:
http://www.poikosoft.com/
Which (despite the name) includes all sorts of other utilities for converting from one format to another, including changing the bit-rate.
this is free resampler ... easy to use ... and has a batch mode ... so just set and forget

(audacity is another ... http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ....but you need to spend a little time getting to know it)
I'd go with AC on audacity, it will do sooo much more than just reduce bitrates, essential tool for anyone that has MP3's in my opinion
