Virtually every time I switch on my computer , there is a message stating that AVG is downloading something to be installed - thus slowing the computer right down

There is always a message saying that the download was succesfull - ( before I switch off the computer )

Surely updates aren't available so frequently - are they ?

yep
I have the same thing, but it isn't THAT long to wait. Better safe than sorry.
BertiWooster. AVG needs to update every day. I have scheduled my AVG to update at the same time each day at a time when I am not likely to be using the pc. It then kicks-in automatically and my computer is always in full protection mode.

Of course, your computer has to be switched on for this to work.

Mine is set for 7am - so I switch on first thing and then get on with my chores while it updates.
Those who write malware are at it constantly, so the security software writers have to stay on their toes, and keep the users up to date against the latest threats.
It's a daily battle.
Mine only takes about 30 secs. to download and update.
