Any suggestions as to where to get one from. It doesn't have to do anything special just connect to the internet and that's it. Never had a laptop before so don't know where to start. Any help much appreciated. daffi x

How much do you want to spend? Do you want new or used?

how cheap is cheap, reasonable spec new laptops are available in a lot of place for under 300quid (try Tesco, Asda, PCworld etc etc)

My opinion..

I've setup several Dell vostro 1700's for a company lately and for the cost (279+shipping) have been pretty impressed with them.

go for a smaller screen they get cheaper, but I've heard the 1300's and 1500's are not so good.
I'd go for one of these:

Essentially, try and get it with Windows XP and not Windows Vista. It'll run faster, you'll have less issues, and you'll still know where to find the settings that you already know about.

Since you aren't doing much with it, anything these days will do -- don't let a salesman try and persuade you into buying a more expensive one! These are only required if you want to do more serious 3D gaming, or heavy digital imaging or video processing work.

I only want to spend up to 200. Would prefer new and definitely prefer XP to Vista. x
A C Computer Warehouse might be worth a look. They sell both new and refurbished laptops. I can personally recommend them for the quality of their service:

you don't know what you don't know .... until you don't know.
(I think)

If you fancy something a bit different
there is Asus's Eee PC

and for 100.00 look here!
http://www.elonexone.co.uk/

I was playing with the eee yesterday .... I want one ;-)
and elonex trade from my home town ... when I get chance .... I'm going to have a fiddle

but for more mainstream kit there are some good suggestions from the others ... next town over from me is the computer warehouse so I'm a biased yorkshireman.
(almost as bad as a yorkshireman with an opinion - you can always tell a yorkshireman .... but not much!))
