Can anyone advise as to how to check if SP1 has been installed on my machine via windows update ? Ive had a look through the update history but can't see anything. I know that in XP it would normally tell you when you looked at the system information.

Go to Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

Check the 'Value' element of the 'Version' item. The text should read like this:
VersionNumber Service Pack 1 Build BuildNumber

If you run WinVer it will tell you. On XP would go Start, Run and type in winver and click OK. Not sure where 'Run' is on Vista, but it should still support winver.

Cheers People, looks like for some reason it hasnt been installed then as the version reads 6.0.6000

SPs don't generally relate to the version number .... the bit that counts are the words service pack x tacked on to the end

MS are supposed to be using a phased install and it just might not be your turn yet

however follow chris's link and you can d/l and install manually (save the file to a mem stick or CD and do your friends a favour!)
