AVG 8.0 and coolwebsearch

I have just downloaded AVG 8.0 free,on the first scan with this it came up with 2800 enteries for coolwebsearch plus a few others in my reg, I went though them one by one and deleted all the items which were not coolwebsearch,I have two questions.
All items were in the same part of my reg and linked to Active X,would it be safe to delete all the active x items in my registery?
Is there a free download which I could use to get rid of all the coolwebsearch in one go?
One thing puzzled me, When I ran a different scanner designed to find and destroy coolwebsearch it told me that I wasn't infected.
