A 32" flatscreen digital TV seems to cost �1000+, whereas a similar analogue TV costs �600 - �800. What are the benefits of buying a digital TV? Will analogue TVs be obsolete in five years time?

Within the next 4 years give or take. The goverment has pledged to switch to digital TV, meaning an old analogue set would be useless .
