At this start of this week I called Sky to switch to Sky Broadband from BT. They asked me to call BT for a MAC code, which I did and passed it on to Sky. While I was on the phone to BT, I was told that when the MAC code is used, that's when BT will cut off my broadband.
When I got home last night I couldn't connect to the net at all, despite the router lights flashing in all the right places. It's not uncommon for my broadband to just stop working so I did what I normally do - switch it off, leave it a while, restart the router and lappy - but this time doing that hasn't worked. I have switched everything off and will not try again until I get home tonight but I have questions:
If Sky told me at the start of the week that it will take 15 days for my service with them to be activated, then when is it exactly they use the MAC code? Would they have used it alaready and BT have stopped my service with them?
If this is the case, then would the lights on the router still be flashing in all the right places indicated that it is indeed connected?
Why does it take so long for Sky to connect me?
If BT have cut me off, am I correct in thiking that I can periodically check to see if Sky have activated me before the due date just by clicking the IE and using the same router I use with BT (I will change the router to the newer one on the activation date)? I never have used the BT Internet option and I don't intend on using whatever the Sky equivalent is, so surely if there's BB, then it will display the page no matter who my provider and no matter what router?

it should be a fairly seamless changeover, one goes off new one comes on pretty much straight away.
it would appear that BT had a few problems last night, check here to see if that includes your area before I go plunging to much in depth on this one :)

Yes the lights on the router will look pretty much as normal even if it's not connected (I know daft innit!!)
you can possibly use your BT router to connect to your sky broadband, but there is a username and password stored in the router which would need to be changed to the sky ones, I only say possibly as BT sometime lock their routers so they will only accept bt usernames.

If it doesn't connect and doesn't over the weekend then my suspicion that BT are facists will be confirmed and I'll just go ahead and install the Sky router and keep trying until I am connected.
I don't like not having the net at home, I don't even use it every night but it's always there! :( LOL

Do you have the SKY router already then? they don't normally send those out until right before the service changes, so if you received it in the last day or so then a good chance it has swapped to sky now.
It's not too bad not having the net at home... until fairly recently I didn't for 3years, It can be quite nice to get away from it sometimes :)

Ethel, if I'm not connected tonight I'll give BT a phone (oh deep joy) and see what's going on, but I was just having a moan about it to a colleague and she's just said her friend changed supplier last week and BT told her that she will be cut off from BT Broadband on the 30th of this month, but she was cut off on Wednesday. The girl called BT and they told her her contract has been terminated but she's still being charged until the end of the month!!!!
