my nephew has acquired an old free comp he wants to use but it only has 256 memory,would installing ubuntu work better than xp with this little memory,cant seem to find any sdram as its about 6 years old so cant put any more memory in.
it will only be used for surfing the net nothing demanding

to be honest they both run at pretty much the same speed on similar speced equipment

obviously ubuntu is free so you don't have the license issue to deal with.
should have said the above is true for a fresh install, once it's all up and running XP has a habit of getting more clogged up with rubbish over time then ubuntu.
Try crucial.com (scan the system or tell it what system it is).

But yes, Ubuntu would work a little better. Xubuntu even better than that (it uses the Xfce windowing system instead of GNOME, which is leaner).

Either way, getting another 256MB would likely help, so if it's cheap enough, do it.
why not just "suck it ans see?"

try it out (a clean install of any OS is a good starter)
and see how it goes.

if it's slow ... or neph develops an interest you can upgrade mem or OS then ....
at 6 years old ... it shouldn't be bad with either OS ... but remember it's 6 years old ... don't spend a lot on it ...
