you know those lamps that you touch and they anything else like a book other metal etc. the only other thing I found they turn on with is if you touch them with certain fruit. How do they work?

My bedside one turns on if my phone or my book touches it
Question Author
i tried a book and it didnt work. only melon...
Dare I ask why you had a melon in bed with you? LOL
Question Author
Apparently if you heat a melon it feels just like the real thing. I was just eating it of course
PMSL!

Wasn't that rather messy in bed?
Question Author
Well there was a wet patch yes but isnt there always?
LMAO!

Only on the mans side :)
how they work depends on it its a capacitance touch swtch or a resistance touch switch.

capacitance switches are the more common one and they use the body's natural capacitance, the switch has a small electrical charge which when touched the overall capacitance changes and triggers the switch

BTW the body's natural capacitance is why we can build up a static charge and get a shock sometimes when we touch things
OK this thread got a bit weird and kinky while I was typing my answer!!!
(What is capitence?)

How did my mobile phone manage to switch it on after I sent a text and accidently brushed it when putting my phone back on the bedside table?
Question Author
I think capacitance is how much you can frink before you need to go for a wee
Question Author
drink ^^
Ahhhhhh, I can frink quite a lot then
Hehe
capitence (sic) is basically stored electricity (or potential difference to be precise) your phone would have triggered a touch switch because the radio energy it uses is a small electrical charge.

Not sure about the melon, I can only assume that as it was being touched at the same time as it touched the switch it conducted the body's small charge to the switch.

Though I am also slightly worried about anyone that takes a melon to bed!!

Ouch my head is hurting, been too long since I done electronics at collage.
LMAO! I'm worried about someone that takes a melon to bed too!

So what about when I put my book down and that touched it and switched it off?
Question Author
I can turn mine on with my willie too
I have no idea about the book, sure sombody who, either, has studied this sort of stuff more recently, or paid more attention that I did will come along and answer :)
I'm going to try it with varioous objects (but not a melon) this evening and report back tomorrow (since I'm internetless at home :( )
I'm guessing not a willie either, unless you borrow one!
