I have recently bought a new Toshiba laptop and can't find a way to alter the brightness and contrast. Can anyone help?

look for little sun symbols on a couple of the keys in a different colour (often on the arrow keys or 2 of the numbers) and use those combined with the function key (bottom left, labeled FN or similar)

if you look round the keyboard you will also find volume keys that work the same way and others

Or you could read the manual
oh you can't alter contrast on LCD displays
No, but you can alter the brightness.

You may want to look at the power management - most laptops have this and it is set to low brightness to make the battery last longer.

You will have a manual, either in paper form or on the hard drive. Or both.

All of this will be fully explained in the manual.
lol ethel ... now you made me laugh ....
bloke ... manual .... read .... ha ha ha
... you'll be suggesting we should ASK for directions next!!!!!

on both my Tosh's it's
fn+f6 and fn+f7
and the tosh power manager turns the backlight down and then off at the drop of a hat
If ypou have NVIDIA graphics card can you not right-click on the desktop & alter it through the control panel
Yes as the others say, it will be a function key. he function key is next to the Windows and ctrl key. The brightness keys are F7 and F8 on my Compaq laptop, i dont think they'd vary much.
On my laptop the brightness keys are on the arrows, bottom right of the keyboard. :)
on my sony they are on f5 and f6
on my HP they are f1 and f2
on my gateway they are up and down arrow

so think it's safe to say they do vary a fair bit :)
i love this place ;0)
