I don't know if this is a common thing but he told me to look for an ariel symbol on either my F1 or F2 keys, if you have one, hold down the FN and the F1or F2 key at the same time and this apparently tells your lappy to enable the wireless function.
I hope that works for you, if not, a proper techie will need to take over here LOL

this is going to be a security key problem, when you say from your home computer do you mean from a wireless router?
if so the router will have a security key set that needs to be entered on the laptop to make the connection, with out the key the laptop will say it is connected but no data will be transmitted either way.
if it is a router post what sort of router it is and somebody will point you in the right direction of how to find the key.

On mine the wifi switch is a little amber light on the front.
But as your laptop is picking up the signal the wifi is switched on.
I suggest you connect the laptop to the router by ethernet cable in the first instance.
Switch both the laptop and the modem/ router off at the mains and switch back on - modem/router first, then laptop.
Hopefully it will now be connected.
What modem/router is it?
