If it's a Microsoft Publisher file it should have a .pub file extension. You can use the free trial version of Microsoft Publisher (even after the trial period has expired) to view such files. See under 'Receiving a publication', here:

Yes thanks for that Chris. I do have 'publisher' on my computer, I have microsoft publisher and msoffice with excel, word, access etc. It doesnt look like its a publisher file, I cant open it in word because all i get are wierd symbols. I will have to email the sender and ask her what she's playing at. This attachment is important, it is work she wants me to edit, which I cannot do if I can't open the bloody thing! Thanks for your help, its appreciaterd.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Just a thought: Sometimes files seem to lose their filename extensions. If the file hasn't got any extension, try saving it and then renaming it by adding .pub onto the end.

If the file has already got an extension, post again to tell us what it is.

Hi Chris,
The attachment appears EXACTLY as above. I have right clicked and gone into properties and get the following, as typed:

protocol Hyper Text Transfer Protocol

Type COM/MC/SHOWMESSAGE File

does this help?

Hi again Chris,
When I downloaded the file it said unknown file so I did as you suggested and saved it as a .pub file. and I am pleased to say it worked. What went wrong? should the sender have saved it as a .pub file before sending it to me?
Bob (dylanfanatic)
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad that you've managed to fix the problem.

It's likely that the sender used the 'File>Send to' option within Publisher without saving the document first. That has a nasty habit of sending files without a file extension. (It's the same with Word and all other programs). I never use 'File>Send to' because I regard it as unreliable. I always save a file first and then open a new mail (to which I'll attach the file) in Outlook Express.
