Hi guys, we bought a Compaq A910EM laptop in March, but recently we have noticed that the bottom of the laptop becomes VERY hot. There is nothing in the cd drive and the power cable is not attached (although more often than not we do use the laptop with the power cable attached as the screen becomes brighter).

The air vent on the side is blowing out warm air, but we just dont know what is happening. anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance

Is the laptop on a firm surface? Air needs to get underneath, so if it's on a lap, or duvet, anything soft, then it will get hot.
ethel is just too coy to go into gory detail

I think you probably need to clean the air intake (a vac is ok on laptops ... but not desktops)

the laptop is getting quite a reputation for being a ball buster (or similar!!)
I'm using a toshiba portege - on the couch - in my shreddies - not a pretty sight .... nor is it my normal habit - (it scares the foxes)... but just a bit of surfing ... and it's uncomfortably warm ... If I give it some real work ... I have to get a tray

these aren't just gimmicks
They do get fairly warm during heavy use even if all the cooling is free of dust and clear for airflow, if it is blocked in any way at all then they get hotter very quickly.

As other have said, don't use them on a duvet, or you lap, make sure it's on a hard surface so it can drag the air through to cool it

And AC... that was not a nice mental image!!! please don't do that again :)
I have a toshiba too and it gets very hot. Even when using a PCMCIA fan which makes about as much difference as peeing in the ocean.

I also recommend a cooling base. There are heaps of laptops about with cooked motherboards, usually the graphics.

Thanks guys, think youve solved my problem. I have it on my lap (how silly of me to assume that a laptop would be fine on my lap!!!!!) whilst i use it, so think that is where im going wrong. Many thanks once again
lol

you should see where I keep my tower system!!!!! ;-)
