I can't restore my i -pod

I have an i-pod which is a pain in the bum to sync with my music...never does it without a long laborious process. So, i decided to restore its settings and whilst it deleted all my music, i-tunes it saying that it can't restore due to an unknown error...so, I am now left with no music (difficult for someone who loves their music so much) and no way to rectify the problem. PLEASE help!!!!!!!!
