... but you will find it increasingly difficult to buy tapes, get your VCR repaired etc, and to record TV programmes. With DVD players now costing from about �15 and Asda having a passable DVD recorder on offer for �50, it may be worth thinking of moving away from video.

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply. I do have both a DVD player and recorder, but I also have quite a large collection of videos of films, etc., which would be too expensive to replace with DVDs and it was these that caused me to ask.

irisfh - why don't you transfer your VHS stuff onto DVD via your DVD recorder? I'm sure it would be possible to connect your video up to the recorder via scart or some other way. Someone on here would surely be able to offer you advice on how to do it.

Thank you for your suggestion - I did think of doing that, but would I be able to transfer movies? I can put my own home movies onto DVDs, but I thought commercial movies were protected in some way.
