How to uninstall XP antivirus 2008
I am at the end of my tether trying to uninstall this program which has completely took over my sons computer. Tried several uninstalls taken from the net but none of them have worked. Driving me nuts. Anyone who has any suggestions please feel free to guide me in the right direction. I am using windows XP.

Just getting load of pop ups which also stops me from using google also. Keeps taking me back to the XP anti virus home page asking me to get the full version.
Obviously not going to. With this being new its only a matter of time before someone finds some kind of patch I'm sure.

What i had to do was to download this prog SmitfraudFix from this location http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php and follow the instuctions on the page then i used a cleanup program called Spyhunter3 to get rid of the rest........Try it it got rid off mine..................................Good Luck

Exactly same symptoms as you. Have tried downloading the file by saving onto a memory stick on my comp. However it won't run on my sons infected comp ( will on mine ). I think it is because XP antivirus is running in the background. Task manager is greyed out so can't stop and when i use ctrl - alt - del it says that the system administrator has disabled task manager. I have tried running file by right clicking and selecting as run as - administrator and putting in password but still no joy.
This is really winding me up now.

I tested this on a VM, and this cleared it up no trouble.

I have tried that one. The trouble is when I try to open the file to run it, it won't open on infected computer. Must be XP antivirus running in background. Need to find a way to stop it running. In normal mode when I try to run msconfig to stop it starting it says that it does not exist.
When you used it did you use the file in normal or safe mode ?
Also I have totally uninstalled my free AVG anti virus 7.5 and tried installing with newer version 8 but it won't let me install the file, so now I have NO anti virus.

I had this also so I can fully understand your feelings. My nephew in Australia walked me through removing it (after a large number of aborted attempts) on Skype. Press Con+Alt+ Del to get Task Manager. Click on Processes and Antivirus 2008 will be on list. Try End Process to delete ( now as it's a few months since I did it , I'm now a bit hazy about actual procedure), so let me know if this doesn't work and I'll contact him - It's 2am over there now but I can get in touch tomorrow. Good luck.
I'm sure i downloaded it on the infected pc (i think i used windows live search to search for it because it disables google and yahoo) saved it to the desktop then booted into safe mode, although i would have thought you could have transfered it to your sons pc i know it hides a lot of your start menu options and your c drive...
Try booting into safe mode to see if you could use antispyware software to remove it.......

Try it in Safe Mode.
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.
I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.
