Microphone stop working

I have always used the same microphone when I talked on the computer with my friends/family, and the person I talked to normally could hear me well. But in the last 2 weeks, they can't hear me although I can hear them perfectly.

The microphone comes together with headphone. It has 2 ends ... one pugged in to headphone socket and another plugged into speaker socket.

I have checked all possibilities and tested microphone (on messeger there is special tool that you can check it). But it said there is no microphone attached/plugged in although it is attached to speaker socket.

I thought it might be my sound card. But the card is perfect because I can still listening to my music and watching movies on laptop or via Internet.

Few weeks ago ebfore the microphone stop working, I bought this surround system for my laptop. I plugged into headphone socket (not speaker socket) as it is advised. When I'm not using it, I unplugged it and use my usual microphone instead. No problem but last 2 weeks the microphone stop working.

Please help me because I need it in order my friends/family can hear me again.

OK firstly on pretty much all computers that I have ever seen you do not have seperate headphone and speaker sockets... they are the same socket and can be used for either... sometimes it is refered to as a speaker socket and sometimes as a headphone socket but it's the same thing.

Your microphone plugs into the microphone socket, which can often also be used as, and is sometimes called a line in socket, but again this is the same socket.

pugging a microphone into a speaker socket will not work... ones an input the others an output!

I would suggest that you double check what socket is what on your system and make sure you have the correct thing plugged into the correct socket.

if, when you are sure that they are, the microphone still doesn't work then double check there is not a mute switch on the headset/microphone somewhere that you have knocked by mistake also double check that you do not have the mic input muted by double clicking on the speaker icon down by the clock and making sure the mute box below the microphone volume slider hasn't got a tick in it.

if it still won't work then it may be a broken lead on the microphone and you'll need to replace it

I'm confused
everything works EXCEPT the mic ... why put all that effort into everything else ?

I bet if you turn off the lights and disconnect the fridge it won't make any difference either (does that little light go off when you shut the door??).

once everything is working ... unless it's a laptop - and you move it ... leave everything connected ... mics don't like being blugged into speaker sockets ... and reconnecting everytime is just another chance to stick plug A into socket B

Hi this to clarify what I was saying.

I have this headphone which has mouth pierce that I can speak to anybody and they normally heard me. This attached to cable (or wahtever you called it) about 2 metres long. At end of the cable, it is split into 2 parts by cables too. At end of each part there is things (I don't kno what you call them). One of these (marked with headphones symbol which normally plugged into the socket on my computer (also marked with headphone symbol). Another end (marked with speaker symbol) which was nomrally plugged in to the socket with marked "Speaker".

When I used this, I can hear someone who is talking to me but they can't hear me. This never happened before. For your record, It was being used like this before and never had problem with it until last 2 weeks.

So this is not true that computers don't have separate sockets for headphone and speaker. My laptop has separate sockets for each.
