sounds to me that you are not logged on the computer as the administrator..maybe as a user set up as a different name....
1) Is the CD drive able to write to CDRs?

2) You need to use burning software like Nero to do this.

3) You could instead use a USB flash stick (assuming old PC has USB ports).

I hear what you are saying but why then will it save photos to a floppy disc but will not burn to a writable CD. ?
cause 98 doesn't burn cds - not well anyhow

just a thought .... you have got a burner attached to that machine .... haven't you?
how did you do it in the past?

colin - 98 doesn't have an administrator

if you go with fo's suggestion ... make sure that you can get 98 drivers for the stick (or ext hdd) before you buy

Yes have got a burner.. in the past I only ever put music on to CD that works fine, I will just have to put them all on to floppy and get a mate to transfer them all on to CD thanx for all your answers....
You may have a USB port for a 'Memory stick' and move your photos to the memory stick?

All PCs have the USB ports......and the memory sticks are quite reasonable to buy; even better borrow!

Yes it has 2 usb ports but even having trouble there as I have tried printing photos (my new printer only has usb connection which works fine on my laptop) but when I try to print from old computer message says * writing error to LPT 1 and gives up .....
But the problem is that (at least with my Camera), your photos will be a few megabytes each. Given that a floppy only stores 1.4MB, you'll be lucky to get one photo per floppy.

If you can borrow a friend's USB flash drive (and get the required drivers for 98 as AC says), it'll work.

Another option for the USB flash drive issue is to use Knoppix. It's a free GNU/Linux live CD (it's an operating system like Windows that runs off the CD), and also reads your internal drive. It also has far better USB support than Windows 98 does. So you could burn Knoppix to CD, boot your computer into Knoppix on the CD (maybe requiring a boot floppy...), then copy your files from hard drive to flash stick or external hard drive.

Certainly a long way round, but it may be the fastest option overall if you have lots of photos to copy.
the imageburn link will work with your burner.
and it's easy to use - and faster than usb or floppy

all usb devices need the correct 98 drivers ... without them it won't work
installing is odd ... drivers first ... then the device - 98 will detect and install the driver then

however on a machine designed for 98 usb will be ver1.1 so will be slow

but fo3's suggestion for using knoppix is well worth considering
In summary:
Best method is to download a burning app like imgburn or InfraRecorder (both work with Win98), and use that to burn a CD of your photos.

Only issue then is getting the app onto your Windows98 machine. Not an issue if you have an internet connection for it.

big thanx to everyone for their help, as I have found win.98
is a nightmare which is why i got rid of it and got a laptop running XP
Hi did you try copying from my pictures? Very simple way to do it. Go to my pictures highlight all pictures you wish to copy and down left hand side you will see copy to cd jist click on there works all the time for me without the need for any other program.
futritcat: he's using Win 98. That's an option using the build-in burning software on XP.
The long way (but possibly the easiest) to do this may be to email individually as an attachment to your new computer.
