Give us a clue ? What hardware is it reporting ?

You need to accept the installation of its driver.

Then it will cease to appear.

Wants to connect to Windows Update. I can click on: : Yes this time only; or Yes now and every time I connect to a device; or No not this time. So I just press cancel. If I say 'Yes' it wants to install software for PCI Simple Communications Controller. Wants me to put in my installation CD - I dont even know where it is ! Do I have to do it or can I just get rid of this window ?

By the way I'm not technical AT ALL so laymens terms please. Thanks all.
PCI simple communications controller this is the modem reporting that the Driver is not installed. You probably get it when you try to download anything but when you start up update will try to connect first. ?

Normally you get a CD with the drivers required on a seperate CD when you buy a PC. A driver is a piece of software that runs your hardware components.

As you say you are not technical it would be best to ask someone who is, to go to Device Manager which is in in System then Hardware within Control Panel and do a driver update which may mean finding the hardware details there and searching the Web for the correct driver

Sorry I dont think there is a magic fix apart from that.

Yes you can turn off Windows Update of course but it is not advised.
Let us know if it fixed it ?

Thanks Sarah, I found the original Driver disc and inserted it, followed the instructions, it seems to have done the trick. I deleted a lot of stuff off Add/Remove last week and must have removed something I needed ... doh. Anyway thanks for your help.
