My standaed Sky digi box has a RS-232 port. As I'm a total ignoramous on this subject, can I connect my computer to the port and down load anything from the Sky box?
Prorbaly not as the great majority of people would be doing it!
Or is the simple way to get a PCI video card and get a scart cable to whatever connector is on the video card? B

got an RS232 port on our Humax PVR it's used for software updates but don't know about the sky box but would imagine it would be similar
Playback of Sky programs requires the Sky card to play them back. No Sky card, no playback.

Even if you could download them to your Pc (you cant) they would not play on your PC.

Thanks Guys. Really as I suspected. B
The RS-232 port on the sky box is to connect a Sky Gnome gadget to the box more details here: http://www.sky.com/gnome

It's only used to download program information to the Gnome i.e. Current Channel Number, Channel Name, Time, Name of program, brief description. If you want to connect the port to a computer and use hyperterminal to look at the data there are details for the encoding methods here: http://www.heenan.me.uk/control-sky-from-pc/gn ome-protocol.html

It can only be used to read currently playing program information, nothing more unfortunately.
