Capturing 8mm Video Tape
2 Answers
Greetings to all,
We have some home movies taken on an 8mm samsung camcorder and we'd like to transfer them to the PC for editing and archiving to DVD.
Is the best option a DVD recorder or a video capture card?
Can anyone recommend a particular model?
Many thanks in advance

Your question depends on a lot of things. Firstly, would this be the first of many such conversions or would this be a one-off? If a one-off it might be more economic to have it done professionally.
If you intend to do more, you could get a capture card, Hauppauge have an excellent name and a wide range to choose from. Then there are the Items like V-Stream into which the various plugs are connected which itself uses a USB to record your films straight to the hard drive.
Whether you want to record from the telly might also influence your decision.
If you need more in-depth info I can give you my email addy.

If you know someone with a Digital 8 camcorder that you can borrow, it should be able to play your tapes, and it will also have a firewire out. So you can use it as an analogue to digital converter. All you will need is a firewire card for your computer like this one:

Which, at 4.61 is probably considerable cheaper than a capture card.
