what's preventing access to media players

I can't access windows media player or real player. I am connected to the net -no problem- but when I try to get the media ,I get a message saying that I'm not connected. There seems to be something blocking access. I've tried everything. Any help would be appreciated. I have windows xp installed. Thank you

does the program open and then immediately give you the error?

response to question: yes, the media programme opens and then immediately tells me that I'm not connected to the internet when, in fact, I am.
Firewall? You may have blocked them on accident or something..

scatman - access to media: Thank you. Yes, I've checked the firewall and this makes no difference. It's all very puzzling
