no not at all, was just wondering as i saw a programme a while ago and it was about an internet fraudster who was caught by the police after pc world found that he had been illegally using other peoples bank accounts on his desktop.

so if all of you information is stored somewhere on your hdd, then surely all of my bank detailes, passwords and security information is stored on my hdd.

this is obviously not very safe if my laptop was taken and fell into the hands of a person who was good with computers, and then theorictally could they access my bank account?

You can go to tools/internet options/Clear history or delete cookies or delete files or go into your search engine (e.g. google) and type in the offending site which should appear in the box then check the 'clear history' box. Then go to confession say three hail Mary's and have a dram with piece of mind

but apperently even things that you have emptied from the re-cycle bin have been deleted, there is still a trace or a kind of ghost file left on the hdd?

....that's one of the reasons I will never do internet banking.

so as soon as sombody does online banking, a record of all of that persons passwords, sort codes and account numbers will forever be on the pc, no matter what?

i must say tho, i am rather niave about the internet tho, and do lots of internet banking.

apperently, a site is safe tho if it has the padlock symbol. does this mean any activity is not put somewhere in the depths of the pc?

If you are worried about the theft/data recovery aspect rather than someone finding naughty site traces you could encrypt your entire hard drive with something like Truecrypt ( http://www.truecrypt.org/ ), which would make data recovery without your password extremely unlikely.

Not for the faint hearted, though!

In IE, go to 'options' and click on the 'advanced' tab. At the bottom there are advnaced settings. Make sure you check the box for 'do not save encrypted pages to disk'. There are other security options worth allowing as well such as being notified if forms are being redirected and changing between secure and non-secure sites. Other browsers have such features too.

The only way to erase all trace of usage is to take out your hard drive and put a nail through it .
