I call this software SPYWARE. 'loadqm.exe' is recognized as "Query Manager" by several SW firewalls. The program comes with MS Messenger and it's supposed to query your computer for versions of that program, download the upgrade in the background while you're online (and steal your bandwidth without asking!!!), and then prompt you if you want the update. Strangly enough 'loadqm.exe' stays on your computer and accesses the net within seconds everytime you connect even if you uninstall the software it came with(!!!). There's also no GUI way to disable the function in Win2000/XP, and no relevant information is to be found at Microsoft support on the subject. Configuring a firewall to block all outgoing and ingoing traffic for 'loadqm.exe' ungently disconnects a dialup within a few seconds every time(!!!). I figure the only way to disable the activities of this program is the uninstall of MS Messenger, and then prevent 'loadqm.exe' to load at startup, this because MS Messenger start and call 'loadqm.exe' while online despite being configured deactivated(!!!).
Unload 'loadqm.exe' by deleting key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\LoadQM
This seems to be enough, but don't take my word for it.
1984? You bet.
