My friends in the states are trying to get video calls on messenger.
One has a pc with msn messenger, the other has a Mac with yahoo messenger.
They both get error messages saying some of the features are not available, is this because it is mac vs pc? or is it yahoo im vs msn im. Or is it a combination of the two?

Nothing to do with whether it's a PC or a Mac. It's all down to whatever client program is being used to chat with.

On the Mac, iChat is the best app for video calls (using an AIM account). aMSN also apparently works with MSN for video calls.

(Adium, the best choice on the Mac for IM stuff, doesn't support video calls yet.)

But really, the best service all round for video calls is Skype. Both Mac and PC official clients from skype.com work well for video.

Cheers, so yahoo on the mac is no good try ichat in AIM then? Will that then link with msn?
No, it does AIM. You can get MSN working through the XMPP system, but it's messing about.

If you have to use MSN, then try aMSN on the Mac (and regular MSN client on Windows).

If you just want to video chat, and are prepared to sign up for a free account, then use Skype.
