Lava Lamp

I have been given a large lava lamp but it has very small pieces of what looks like tin foil which float about, instead of the normal waxy stuff.
The problem is the inside of the glass is rather dirty and spoils the effect somewhat.
I would like to break the sealed lid on the top, empty the contents into a container and clean the inside of the glass.
I was just wondering what the clear liquid is and if there would be any problems in emptying and refilling it.

It would be safer to buy a new one...
