Reusing Microsoft Office disc

I want to install my copy of Microsoft Office on a new computer.

A friend has told me that I can go to the Microsoft website, and record the fact that this Mocrosoft Office disc is no longer being used on the original computer ...

... and then I am okay to install it on the new computer.

Does anyone know if that is correct, and where I could find the link?

As long as you have scrapped the first computer or removed it you dont need to tell them at all

Arrrrgh, overly complicated Microsoft license time!!

If you bought office on it's own then you can just remove from old computer and install it on your new machine with no problem.

If it was on the computer when you bought it then it is probably an OEM copy and is therefore tied to the computer and you shouldn't install it on a new one.

However that said I've never encountered any problems in just installing it on a new computer.

p.s. if one or both of the computers is a laptop then it's OK to have them both installed with the same copy of office at the same time as the license says you can install the same copy on a primary computer (that can be a laptop or a desktop) and a secondary mobile device (that has to be a laptop)

... don't I need to somehow notify Microsoft that the first computer has been scrapped? Otherwise, how do Microsoft know that you're not doing multiple installations from one disc?

No you don't need to inform them.

And as I said as long as one of them is a laptop you can install it on them both at the same time anyhow.

Well as long as it's a retail copy and not a pre installed OEM copy

if it's retail you will have had a box for it, if it's OEM it just would have been in a paper CD wallet.

Chuck, it a copy that I bought, so it's in a case.

I installed it on a laptop (now scrapped).

Then I installed it on my next laptop when I did a reinstall of the OS.

If I keep using it, I just thought I should somehow 'unregister' the first laptop. Otherwise, how do Microsoft know that you've scrapped it?

Am I just being a bit blonde?

What is an "OEM Copy" please ?

Original Equipment Manufacturer.

So essentially, it's the copy of MS Office supplied by Dell (in my case) ?

You dont have to register any software if you dont want to so they do not need to know and if its an original you obviously have the serial number so just install it and dont worry about it

Just install Office as your cookies will record to Ms.

If you get the Error contact Ms window, just cancel window & carry on. Ms doesn't have dungeons so no fear.

smouse ... I had a feeling you could only log on to Office applications 50 times before you had to register your copy. But I'm not really an expert. In fact, I'm not even remotely an expert. But in any case, I want to do it all properly.

Yes, I'm out of the Dungeon. Actually, it's not a new PC. I run four computers from my little hidey hole at home ...

Computer 1 ... runs work and information for clients, and is not connected to the web, so it is safe from hacking, viruses, etc.

Computer 2 ... is used exclusively for my own Accounts, so that, as and when I need to, I can drop it off with my accountants without interrupting my own work.

Computer 3 ... is my serious work computer, which swaps info with Computers 1 and 2 only by removable media storage devices (chips, CDs, or whatever) to minimise the risk of infecting Computers 1 or 2.

Computer 4 ... is my general lappy, for emailing, web browsing, ABing, etc, and as a back-up for Computer 3. Computer 4 is the one that I'm currently having trouble with.

I would normally only come on AB from Computer 4. Today, in order to try to find help with Computer 4, I'm using Computer 3, so if I pick up a virus, I will be really upset.
