Computer shut itself down, and when I tried starting it up again I found that the fans came on, the dvd drive light comes on, motherboard light comes on, but thats all. Tried rebooting bios by taking out and replacing battery, checking connections etc., but nothing else. I remember when I had XP it used to give its startup bleep but it doesn't do one now. Incidentally I have a 500Gb had drive with loads of free space on it and 2Gb of RAM. i have disconnected the printer, other USB devices and tried disabling physically the DVD drive (as thereis a blank disc in it), but all to no avail

and your question is?
Try booting the machine with dvd isolated ie no power or ata/ide connector, remove any additional cards fitted including graphics this will then take this hardware out of the equation. Also try swapping memory about or dropping a strip in case memory fault is causing the problem.
